Blueberries are one of the most useful berries in the world. But in order to gather it in the forest, sometimes you have to go through serious tests. You will be bothered by mosquitoes, and you need to beware of ticks. The heat and humidity at which the berries reach the desired size can be very tiring for a person. Prices for this berry are very high. And you can not always be sure that you collected it in a clean area. There is a way: grow blueberries yourself!
Choose a grade
It is very important to choose exactly the variety of berries that will adapt well to the conditions of your garden. Most blueberry varieties like moisture and heat, but there are also those that feel good in a dry, cool climate. It is better to buy seedlings in special stores, because in the forest near the site the microclimate may be different.
Check soil acidity
Summer residents are accustomed to plant plants in the land that is on the site. But blueberry bushes can be very capricious. The soil acidity for this berry should be between 4 and 5 ph. Make measurements using special strips, which can be purchased at a pharmacy or medical equipment. If the soil does not fit, buy a special ground for blueberries.
Choose the right landing point
Blueberries need a lot of sunny color, otherwise the berries will be small and sour. Place your beds or pots where the sun is all day long. Take care that the distance between the bushes is at least 10 centimeters. If the berries will grow in pots, choose large and deep.
Protect your bushes
Enjoy the sweet berries you want, not only. Blueberries can be threatened by hares, field mice and moles. Protect the bushes with a small fence, and the roots with a plastic net.
Periodically prune branches
One bush can bear fruit up to 20 years. But occasionally you will have to prune the branches. There will be no berries in these seasons.
Start by planting your first blueberry bushes in early spring, and in the summer you can enjoy sweet berries.
